4chan auto board engages in aggressive car-based character profiling
Users on /o/ spent Sunday afternoon making sweeping biographical judgments about posters based solely on their vehicle choices, with results ranging from oddly accurate to deeply unhinged.
In a thread that can only be described as automotive phrenology, users on 4chan’s /o/ board spent the better part of Sunday attempting to profile fellow posters based on what they drive, allegedly discovering surprising accuracy in the process.
The exercise began innocently enough when the original poster volunteered ownership of a Seat Arona with a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine and DSG transmission, prompting one commenter to speculate: “You’re from the midwest and work some sort of skilled technical trade that affords you the ability to not need a used econobox.”
From there, the thread devolved into a parade of automotive stereotyping. One user offered a granular profile of a hypothetical SW20 MR2 owner: “A 5’8 - 5’10 skinny white guy with brown hair in his early-mid 30s that works IT and has a Vietnamese wife.” Another respondent allegedly nailed a Mustang GT owner with brutal specificity: “Europoor of some sort, married with 1 kid, frumpy wife who nags a little but is otherwise a good person, shitty apartment, secretly hates immigrants, but is unable to voice his frustration due to friend-group.”
Not all commenters took the exercise in good humor. One user dismissed the board’s collective taste as fundamentally broken, writing: “a bunch of sub 2L econoboxes, a handful of old irredeemably shitty hoopdes you don’t even take care of, literally nothing nice or interesting. Solid auto enthusiast board.”
The thread also spiraled into technical tangents about Chevrolet Caprice imports, LPG conversions (which one commenter described as “a plague”), and the relative merits of different BMW generations. A heated sub-discussion erupted over reverse-parking etiquette, with one user calling out a poster for spite-backing into a parking space when a pull-through spot allegedly existed.
One particularly unhinged commenter used a racial slur when venting about LPG-converted vehicles, though most replies focused on the genuinely bizarre phenomenon of a V8-powered LPG Bimmer somewhere in Europe.
The thread’s consensus, insofar as consensus exists: your car choice reveals everything about you, and most of you are driving garbage. Whether any of it was actually true remained unclear.
